Privacy Policy
TermAlert is a Chrome browser extension that analyzes Terms of Service and Privacy Policy documents before you agree to them. This policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and what is stored.
1. What Data We Access
When you click an agree, accept, or sign-up button on a webpage, TermAlert:
- Searches the page for a linked Terms of Service or Privacy Policy document
- Fetches the content of that ToS page
- Extracts the text and sends it to our proxy server for AI analysis
- Displays the result to you in an overlay — before your click is registered
TermAlert does not access, collect, or transmit:
- Your personal information (name, email, passwords, etc.)
- Your general browsing history
- Form data or login credentials
- The content of pages you visit generally — only the linked ToS document
2. What Data Is Stored Locally
When you choose to proceed after viewing an analysis, TermAlert saves the following to your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local):
- The URL of the ToS document
- The AI-generated summary and traffic light rating
- The date you agreed
This data stays entirely on your device. It is used to power the change-detection feature — TermAlert periodically re-fetches saved ToS documents and notifies you if they have changed. This data is never transmitted to our servers.
3. Third-Party Services
When analyzing a ToS document, the extracted text is sent through the following services:
- TermAlert Proxy Server (hosted on Render): relays the analysis request between the extension and the AI provider. The text is not stored beyond the duration of the request.
- OpenRouter (openrouter.ai): routes the request to the AI model. See OpenRouter's privacy policy.
- Google Gemini 2.0 Flash: performs the AI analysis. See Google's privacy policy.
Only the ToS document text is sent — never your personal data or browsing context.
4. Chrome Permissions
TermAlert requests the following Chrome permissions, and only uses them for the purposes stated:
- storage — to save agreed ToS records locally in your browser
- alarms — to schedule weekly checks for changes to saved ToS documents
- notifications — to alert you when a saved ToS has changed
- scripting and broad host permissions — to detect buttons and display the analysis overlay on webpages you visit
5. Data Retention
Locally stored ToS records remain in your browser until you manually clear them via the extension popup, or until you uninstall TermAlert. No data is retained on our servers.
6. Children's Privacy
TermAlert is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect any information from children.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the extension evolves. The "last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. Continued use of the extension after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
